Tom is a fictional cartoon character, best known for his role in the "Tom & Jerry" series of theatrical animated shorts. He first appeared in the 1940 MGM short "Puss Gets the Boot," initially under the name "Jasper."

Tom is an anthropomorphic blue-grey cat. He is perpetually chasing Jerry, a brown house mouse, though the reasons for the chase vary. Sometimes, it is simply predatory instinct, while other times, Tom is motivated by a desire to please his human owner or prevent Jerry from raiding the refrigerator.

Despite his constant pursuit, Tom rarely succeeds in catching Jerry. Their relationship is often characterized by slapstick violence and elaborate schemes, with both characters frequently outsmarting each other. While often portrayed as rivals, there are instances where Tom and Jerry display surprising moments of friendship or cooperation.
